Wireless Power Dev Kit with FCC-Approved Transmitter Charges Devices up to 80 feet

Powercast’s wireless power development kit with FCC-approved transmitter charges devices up to 80 feet

Pittsburgh, PA – June 14, 2017 – Powercast Corporation, the leader in long-range wireless power for 14 years, today announced a development kit that enables manufacturers of smart, connected devices to easily design and deploy them using Powercast’s wireless power technology. The kit includes Powercast’s FCC-approved Powercaster® transmitter (FCC ID:  YESTX91501, IC #:  8985A-TX91501), battery recharging boards in typical device shapes (wristbands, smart cards), a Powerharvester® evaluation board, Powerharvester receiving antennas, two BLE radio boards, and a first generation of a new PowerSpot® transmitter.

The Powercaster transmitter targets commercial and industrial wearables, smart cards, and sensor applications, enabling a wireless powering range of one to 80 feet depending on the end device and application. Wireless recharging can, for example: 1) allow hermetically-sealed, washable wearables like heated jackets and illuminated safety vests to recharge while hanging in a closet, 2) make smart bands used by cruise lines or theme parks reusable and more functionally robust with display interaction or audible messages that would normally drain batteries, and 3) eliminate the need for battery replacement in access control smart cards.

The new, smaller PowerSpot transmitter is a first-generation subassembly, intended for manufacturers to embed in their products so they become sources of wireless power themselves, able to automatically charge multiple devices around them. Consider a coat rack that recharges smart wearables, an alarm clock that recharges mobile devices, or a small tabletop box that recharges game controllers, keyboards and mice. A smarter, fully-featured PowerSpot intended as a standalone transmitter for recharging consumer devices is undergoing FCC testing. “Our long-term vision is for consumers to be able to wirelessly recharge their Powercast-enabled devices simply by placing them within range of a PowerSpot transmitter,” said Powercast’s COO/CTO Charles Greene, Ph.D. “No wires, cables or charging mats needed.”

In Powercast’s patented wireless power technology, the transmitter sends RF energy (radio waves) to the Powerharvester embedded in a device, which converts it to DC (with up to 75% efficiency) to directly power that device or recharge its batteries. Operating across a wide RF power (as low as -17 dBm) and frequency (10MHz to 6GHz) range, Powercast’s PCC110 Powerharvester chip maintains high conversion efficiency amid changing parameters like distance and state of battery charge. The technology is designed and tested to meet both U.S. and global standards for user safety and device interference.

The kit, configured for out-of-the-box operation, includes iOS and Android Apps. Attaching BLE radio boards to the wristband or credit card battery recharging boards allows developers to transmit measured charge current and battery voltage via BLE live, for cable-free monitoring.  This enables testing of both configurations on recharging boards simultaneously.

Powercast’s P1110-EVB evaluation board, including two antenna configurations, is included for further hands-on development with the Powerharvester receiver.

“We’ve helped customers solve remote wireless charging problems since our products hit the market in 2010,” said Greene, “including powering sealable waterproof designs, and battery-free wireless sensors used in machine condition monitoring where battery replacement is difficult.”

The $1250 kit is available through distributors Mouser, Arrow, and Future Electronics.

The kit is on display June 15 at Pepcom’s Digital Experience!, Metropolitan Pavilion, New York.

RFID Sensor Tags for Environmental Monitoring

Powercast’s Multi-Sensor RFID Tags Boast 10 Meter Read Range

Battery-free and rechargeable battery versions can include multiple sensors in a single tag, and leverage existing UHF RFID infrastructure

Phoenix, AZ – RFID Journal Live! – May 9, 2017 — Powercast Corporation, the leader in wireless power-over-distance technology for 14 years, today announced the industry’s first RFID Sensor Tags which can include multiple sensors in a single tag, and provide the industry’s longest read range of 10 meters, or 32 feet. High accuracy temperature, humidity and light sensors are now available, with more sensor types planned for the future. Tags for sensing the RFID reader’s field are also available and use an on-board LED to show field strength.

Designed for industrial and manufacturing applications where it’s necessary to monitor data to ensure goods don’t fall outside of acceptable parameters, the ultrahigh frequency (UHF) RFID Sensor Tags enable environmental condition monitoring throughout the shipping journey, for example, of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals or perishable products packed with dry ice.

Powercast offers two versions of its high-function RFID Sensor Tags:

  • The PCT100 enables battery-free wireless sensing and can read data within seconds.
  • The PCT200 adds a battery with the unique ability to recharge using any standard RFID reader’s field, making the tag reusable without plugging in or changing batteries. With up to one month of battery life without recharging, the PCT200 provides long-lasting data-logging capabilities while outside the RF field. Users can easily set its data read times from one minute to one hour.

Powercast’s Patented RF Harvesting Technology Enables Efficient, High-Function RFID:

The RFID Sensor Tags use Powercast’s patented RF-harvesting technology where the embedded Powerharvester® receiver can generate power purely from a standard RFID reader.

How it works:

An RFID reader generates an electromagnetic signal, which the Tag’s NXP UCODE RFID chip captures via its receiving antenna. Powercast’s efficient, RF-to-DC converter (50-75% conversion efficiency) then transforms the signal into energy to power the microcontroller and sensors for measuring environmental conditions. The microcontroller then forwards that data over I2C to NXP’s RFID chip for storage in user memory, which the reader can then read out of memory.

“We call it high-function RFID because these new passive RFID Sensor Tags have more than 10 times the operational power of standard passive RFID tags enabling advanced features and unparalleled computing power,” said Dr. Charles Greene, Powercast’s COO/CTO.

Features:

  • EPC Class 1 Gen 2 compliant
  • ISO/IEC 18000-6C compliant
  • 10 meter read range
  • High accuracy sensors
  • Wide RF range: -17dBm to +20dBm
  • Frequency range: 860MHz to 960MHz
  • “Find Tag” feature – enables locating one specific tag by illuminating on-board LED
  • Temperature range: -40 to +85C
  • Compact, convenient, hard case package
  • RoHS compliant
  • High conversion efficiency, up to 75%

The PCT100 and PCT200 can be configured with one, two or three sensors in any combination of temperature, humidity and light.  The PCT100 can also be configured with an on-board LED for showing an RFID reader’s field strength and to verify that it is reading properly. Sample quantities with evaluation software are available from distributors Mouser, Arrow and Future Electronics. Large quantities will range from US$10 to $35 depending on configuration.

The RFID Sensor Tags will debut at RFID Journal LIVE!, Booth #453, May 9 – 12, Phoenix, AZ.
