As smart sensor tags evolve beyond basic identification, they are gaining expanded capabilities such as temperature and humidity sensing, movement detection, location tracking, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication. But enabling these capabilities creates one fundamental challenge: power.
Powercast and Dracula Technologies are exploring how multiple energy-harvesting technologies can work together to provide smart tags with more consistent access to energy without relying on disposable batteries.
By combining Powercast’s EDGE RF wireless power technology with Dracula Technologies’ organic photovoltaic (OPV) energy harvesting, smart tags can harvest energy from multiple sources depending on what is available in their environment. EDGE RF Hubs energy can provide power when an EDGE Node sensor tag is within range of wireless power infrastructure, while OPV can harvest available light.
This dual-source approach can help bridge energy gaps as environmental conditions change, supporting more consistent sensing, communication, and data collection at the physical edge.
For OEMs, this opens new possibilities for battery-free EDGE Nodes across asset tracking, smart buildings, smart factories, logistics, and other IoT applications.
